Family Activities in Dubrovnik
December 27, 2023
Dubrovnik is a mesmerising city on Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian Coast. With its rich history and unforgettable coastal landscapes, it’s no wonder that it’s at the top of many holiday bucket lists! Whilst it may be famed for its breathtaking scenery and, of course, its Game of Thrones filming locations, it’s also a fantastic destination for a family holiday. From exploring mediaeval forts to enjoying sea kayaking adventures, there’s plenty to do for children of all ages. Whether you’re travelling with toddlers or teens, we’ve rounded up the ultimate list of family activities in Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik Aquarium and Maritime Museum
For an educational and entertaining afternoon with the family, head to the Dubrovnik Aquarium and Maritime Museum. Situated within the walls of the mediaeval fortress of St. John, the aquarium and museum showcase a diverse range of marine life from the Adriatic Sea. Little ones will be fascinated by the interactive exhibits, including touch tanks and informative displays about the city’s maritime heritage. Run by the University of Dubrovnik’s Institute for Marine & Coastal Research, it also serves as a rehabilitation centre for injured sea turtles. The aquarium is open daily at 9 am and closes between 5 pm and 8 pm, depending upon the season.
Game of Thrones Tour
For families with older children and teens who are fans of the hit TV series Game of Thrones, a guided tour through the filming locations in Dubrovnik is a must. Explore iconic sites like King’s Landing and the Red Keep, and gain insights into the making of the show. Many tour operators offer family-friendly versions, ensuring an engaging experience for everyone.
Lokrum Island Adventure
Take a short ferry ride to Lokrum Island for a family-friendly adventure. The island boasts lush gardens, peacocks roaming freely, historic landmarks, and a salt lake that’s perfect for bathing. Families can explore the botanical gardens, visit the Benedictine monastery, and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the shaded paths through to the beautiful beaches. There’s even an exhibition dedicated to the filming of Game of Thrones, which includes a replica of the Iron Throne from the series on which visitors can sit to take pictures.
Dubrovnik Cable Car Ride
One of the best family activities in Dubrovnik that offers breathtaking views of the city and the Adriatic Sea is the cable car ride to Mount Srd. Children of all ages will love the exhilarating journey to the summit, where a panoramic terrace provides a perfect backdrop for family photos. The journey takes around three and a half minutes to ascend (or descend) the hill – travelling a distance of 778m – and is a very smooth ride. Once at the top, visit Fort Imperial for historical insights and enjoy a snack at the mountaintop restaurant.
Sea Kayaking Adventure
For adventurous families, why not experience Dubrovnik’s coastline from a different perspective with a family sea kayaking tour? Paddle along the city walls, explore hidden caves, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic. Many tour operators offer family-friendly kayaking experiences with expert guides, ensuring a safe and enjoyable outing for all.
Banje Beach Fun
Located near the Old Town, Banje Beach offers more than just a scenic view. Families can relax on the pebbled shores, swim in the azure waters, and partake in water sports activities. Several beach clubs and cafes provide a lively atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a family beach day.

Wander the City Walls
With a history dating back to the 7th century, the Walls of Dubrovnik are among the city’s most iconic attractions, offering an adventure that’s as educational as it is fun. Take great family photos amongst the incredible backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the picturesque Old Port and the Old Town’s blanket of terracotta rooftops. You could also turn it into an exciting treasure hunt for the little ones – create a list of historical landmarks, secret spots, or interesting details, turning the exploration into an engaging and educational adventure. It is worth noting that there is a one-way system around the walls due to the narrow sections and potential human traffic jams. Be sure to take plenty of water with you, as it gets pretty hot up there.
Cadmos Village Adventure Park
Burn off some energy at Cadmos Village, an eco-friendly adventure park within the picturesque Konavle region and only a 30-minute drive from Dubrovnik. There’s plenty to keep all ages entertained, including four different ziplines, a giant swing, as well as archery, bike tours, and paintball. With a special focus on sustainable tourism and respecting nature, it’s a great place for kids to learn and play.
