Things we love…
“Gran Canaria is truly beautiful. With large portions of the island designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the variety of landscapes – from beaches to lush forests and mountainous terrain showcases a remarkable diversity of nature that is truly awe-inspiring”
Things to be aware of…
“Since Gran Canaria is closer to the equator than Spain, it is important to bear in mind that it can be much hotter during the summer months. Be sure to bring protective clothing and high-UV protection suncream and consider staying out of the sun during the hottest hours. Also, remember that some of the more forested areas can become hotspots for bugs in summer, so pack some insect repellent and bite cream!”

Best Time to Visit Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria, the third-largest island of the canaries, is sometimes called the “island of eternal spring”. With warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine year-round, Gran Canaria is a dream destination no matter when you choose to visit. But depending on your preferences – whether it’s soaking up the sun on pristine beaches, hiking through lush mountains, or experiencing local festivals – certain times of the year may suit you better than others.

For beach lovers, the summer months of June through August are perfect for basking in the hot sun and enjoying the vibrant energy of popular spots like Playa de Amadores or Maspalomas. Spring and autumn are equally wonderful, offering pleasant weather with fewer crowds and lower prices.

Winter, from December to February, is a favourite for those escaping colder climates and wanting a milder festive period. With daytime temperatures averaging 20-25°C it’s the ideal time for sun-seekers or those looking to enjoy outdoor adventures such as hiking, without the need for layers of protective clothing.

Gran Canaria also comes alive with events throughout the year, with festivals featuring music and dancing or food and wine celebrations such as the autumn harvest festival. How to get to Gran Canaria

By plane:

Getting to Gran Canaria by plane is very straightforward, with flights from a number of UK airports and airlines all flying directly to the island. Gran Canaria Airport is also known as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria  or Gando Airport (LPA) and flights from the UK take around 4 hours.

By car:

Getting to Gran Canaria from the Spanish mainland with your car is also an option. Ferries depart from the ports of Huelva and Cádiz on the southwestern coast of Spain, arriving on Gran Canaria at the main ferry port of Las Palmas. Bear in mind the ferry crossing takes between 8.5 and 13.5 hours depending on the route you choose.

By bus:

You cannot travel directly to Gran Canaria by bus, but you can journey from mainland cities such as Madrid or Seville to one of the Spanish ferry ports of Huelva and Cádiz by bus and then cross to Las Palmas ferry port on Gran Canaria.

Similarly, as Gran Canaria is an island, visitors cannot travel directly by rail, but it is possible to get a train to the Spanish ferry ports of Huelva and Cádiz followed by a ferry crossing to the Canaries. Spain’s rail operator runs long-distance services to Cadiz from many of the main cities, such as Barcelona, Madrid and Seville.

By boat:

Visitors can easily reach Gran Canaria by boat, which is the second easiest way to get to the island outside of flying directly.
