Best Time To Visit Lanzarote

Lanzarote, with its glowing sunshine, beautiful landscapes, and picture-perfect beaches, is a destination that beckons visitors at any time of year. But with mild winters and warm summers, deciding when to visit Lanzarote can depend on what you’re looking for – whether it’s perfect beach weather, vibrant local festivals, or exploring the island’s unique natural beauty without the crowds. Read on and we’ll break down the best time to visit Lanzarote, so you can plan your trip according to your ideal experience.

Lanzarote in Winter

December, January, and February are the coldest months in Lanzarote. However, temperatures rarely drop below 13°C, making it relatively mild. With minimal rain and highs of 22°C, winter visitors often say this is the best time to visit Lanzarote if you want to enjoy a swim in the sea and balmy weather without needing to stay within arm’s length of a pool for your entire holiday.

The winter sun is just as stunning, and holidaymakers can better enjoy the island’s natural beauty – hiking, biking, and exploring the landscape – without the risk of overheating. Exploring Timanfaya National Park and its otherworldly landscapes without throngs of tourists blocking your path is a fantastic way to experience Lanzarote in winter. Likewise, walking through the La Geria vineyards on a guided tour with only a small group allows for a more intimate and peaceful way to get to know the island.

Winter is also the best time to visit Lanzarote if you want to experience the festive season in a new place, embracing different traditions and holiday cheer. While some businesses close on and around Christmas – especially Christmas Eve, which is particularly important in Spain – many bars and restaurants remain open for both holidaymakers and locals. Visitors can explore nativity scenes, browse the many Christmas markets in towns across Lanzarote, or watch the Three Kings’ Day celebrations on January 6th, which mark the arrival of the Wise Men bringing gifts to Jesus. It’s a truly special way to spend the holiday season.

Finally, these winter months are a great time to visit Lanzarote as flights and accommodation are significantly cheaper than during peak season. While you should check that ferries are running at your preferred times (if this is your chosen mode of travel), winter is a great option for those travelling on a budget!

Lanzarote in Spring

Spring, much like winter, is one of the best times to visit Lanzarote if you want to avoid the intensity of the summer heat. During March, April, and May, temperatures typically range between 20 and 25°C, and this is also when the sea begins to warm up – making it the perfect time for a swim. With longer daylight hours, spring is ideal for evening walks without the discomfort of midday heat.

During this season, the island is at its most beautiful, with blooming flora and awakening wildlife creating breathtaking scenery. Exploring Timanfaya National Park, strolling through the vineyards, or hiking along one of the island’s many trails will leave you in awe of the Canary Islands’ natural beauty, while the scent of fragrant greenery fills the air.

Spring is also a fantastic time to immerse yourself in local life and events, including the Puerto Calero April Fair, where visitors can enjoy local food, crafts, and even donkey rides. The season also brings sporting events such as the Spring Duathlon in Costa Teguise, along with other competitions that are perfect for tourists to watch and enjoy.

With the peak tourist season yet to begin, spring offers the best of both worlds – pleasant weather, open attractions, and local businesses in full swing – without the overwhelming summer crowds.

Lanzarote in Summer

The most popular time of year to visit Lanzarote is during the summer months. In June, July, and August, temperatures can soar to 30°C, and the Calima – a hot wind from the Sahara – can make it feel even hotter. With no rain and warm evenings, summer is the perfect time to bask in the sun, spend long days by the pool, or relax by the sea.

While it is the busiest season, it’s also when businesses are in full swing, ensuring a lively atmosphere with bars, clubs, restaurants, and activities all open and thriving. Whether you’re exploring Jameos del Agua, the stunning underground lake, or unwinding on one of Lanzarote’s many beaches (check out our blog on the best beaches in Lanzarote), there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the summer. Water sports are also in full swing for those looking for a bit of adventure.

The summer months also bring exciting events, including Nuestra Señora del Carmen in mid-June, a festival honouring the patron saint of fishermen, featuring vibrant processions and traditional Canarian cuisine across the island.

Lanzarote in Autumn

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Lanzarote if you want to savour the last moments of summer while enjoying quieter towns as the tourist season winds down. With milder conditions and temperatures averaging between 22 and 26°C, you can relax on the beaches, explore the culture, and indulge in local cuisine without the large crowds of the summer months. September, October, and November still offer warm sea temperatures of around 24°C, while the cooler air allows for longer walks and outdoor activities without the risk of overheating under the peak sun.

Autumn also brings a variety of harvest activities and events that visitors can enjoy during their stay. Exploring markets in Teguise or Mancha Blanca, where you’ll find seasonal local produce, is a great way to embrace the island’s seasonal changes. Visiting vineyards and nearby farms provides a unique taste of local life that you might not experience otherwise.

Cultural festivities are also in full swing, including multiple Saints’ Days in October, where tourists can watch and take part in local traditions. For outdoor enthusiasts, the season also hosts several cycling and running races, making it an ideal time to enjoy Lanzarote’s stunning landscapes while staying active.

Lanzarote can be the perfect holiday destination year-round, offering something special in every season, whether you’re seeking warm winter sun, vibrant summer festivities, or the tranquillity of spring and autumn. No matter when you visit, the island’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and incredible cuisine will be sure to impress!
