Best Things To Do in Lanzarote
May 12, 2025
Lanzarote isn’t just another sunny Canarian Island in Spain – it’s a place full of character with plenty of unique experiences to enjoy. From its rugged volcanic landscapes to its golden beaches and quaint villages, there’s so much to explore. Whether you’re up for an action-packed adventure, a laid-back beach day, or something in between, Lanzarote has you covered. In this blog, we’ll share what we consider to be some of the best things to do in Lanzarote, so you can make the most of your time on this incredible island.
Hit The Beach
First on the list is a visit to some of Lanzarote’s incredible beaches. While an obvious addition to any itinerary, stopping by the island’s picturesque shorelines is essential – even in the winter months. From the sweeping sands of Famara Beach to the secluded coves dotted around the coastline, there’s a spot for everyone, whether you’re looking to relax or dive into adventure. For those wanting to take a dip, we highly recommend Playa Chica, a calm and pristine beach with crystal-clear waters, making it one of the best spots for snorkelling. Beneath the surface, a vibrant underwater world teems with marine life, offering the chance to spot multi-coloured fish and all sorts of marine life. Walking along the soft sand, spotting fish, and then drying off at a nearby beach bar is one of the simplest and best ways to spend a day on Lanzarote.
Take A Hike
For those who love outdoor adventures, one of the best things to do in Lanzarote is to hike or cycle. The island boasts a range of trails that take visitors through volcanic terrain and lush landscapes, providing a completely different perspective from the typical beach experience. As well as the iconic Timanfaya National Park – where visitors can walk across warm volcanic rocks – there are also scenic hiking routes in Puerto del Carmen and an accessible short trail on the edge of the park. These well-signposted paths are perfect for exploring Lanzarote’s natural beauty. If you’re planning to visit multiple hiking spots, renting a car is highly recommended, as some trails are in remote areas. However, for those eager to immerse themselves in nature, the effort is well worth it.
Sample Local Wine
For a taste of the island’s culture, a visit to La Geria and its stunning vineyards is a must. This protected volcanic landscape is home to several wineries that take advantage of the fertile soil to produce the island’s famous sweet white wine. A ‘geria’ is a cone-shaped hollow, which is several metres deep in volcanic gravel, and in the centre of a vine is planted. A half-moon shaped wall is then built around the vine in order to protect it from the wind. Many of the vineyards offer tours and tastings, making it an ideal activity for wine enthusiasts. Walking through the fields, learning about the unique growing process, and sampling the local wines is a fantastic way to experience Lanzarote’s agricultural heritage.
Visit A Museum
Lanzarote is also home to an impressive selection of museums and galleries. One of the most popular is the Castillo de San Jose, which houses the International Museum of Contemporary Art in Arrecife. This museum not only features a diverse collection of modern art and sculptures but also showcases historical and archaeological artefacts within the walls of the old castle. The location itself is worth a visit, offering stunning views of the bay, and there’s even an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy delicious food while taking in the scenery.
For an unexpected yet fascinating stop, the Aeronautical Museum of Lanzarote, located within the airport grounds, is worth visiting – especially as a first or last pitstop. This museum delves into the island’s aviation history, featuring memorabilia, old machinery, and artwork by César Manrique. It is definitely more on the educational side, but very engaging and an insight into the evolution of air travel in Lanzarote, making it an interesting addition to any itinerary.
Visit Jameos del Agua
Another must-see attraction on our list of the best things to do in Lanzarote is Jameos del Agua, an extraordinary art and culture centre designed by the renowned architect/artist César Manrique. This site is built within a volcanic tunnel, blending natural and artistic vibes. The space features a breathtaking underground lake, a museum, a restaurant, and even a stage and auditorium for live performances. Jameos del Agua is difficult to describe – it’s truly a place that must be seen in person to appreciate the impressive creativity behind its creation.
Take In The Views
For breathtaking views and unforgettable photo opportunities, head to Mirador del Rio, a gorgeous observation point in the north of the island. Another masterpiece by César Manrique, this viewpoint merges into the natural cliffs of Famara, offering panoramic views of the Canary archipelago. The design of the viewing area blends with the landscape, enhancing the experience without disrupting the natural beauty – a constant focus of this artist/architect. With a cafe on-site, visitors can sit back and soak in the spectacular scenery while enjoying a coffee.

Explore A Botanical Garden
To experience yet another side of Lanzarote, a visit to the Jardin de Cactus is highly recommended. Located in Guatiza, this botanical garden is home to over 4,000 species of cacti from around the world. Designed (again!) by César Manrique, the garden is built within an old quarry, reflecting his dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly design. As you wander along the winding paths, you’ll encounter a collection of cacti, ranging from towering, spiky mammoths to delicate flowering species. Despite being a lesser-known attraction, the garden’s striking visuals and peaceful atmosphere make it a hidden gem well worth exploring. And, of course, there’s a cafe on-site for visitors to relax and enjoy a drink after their visit!
Lanzarote is an island that truly has it all – stunning beaches, volcanic landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and unforgettable adventures. No matter where your interests lie, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. From walking along golden shores and hiking through lava fields to discovering world-class art and sipping local wines, Lanzarote offers a perfect blend of nature, history and leisure.
