Things we love…
“We love the beaches here in Tenerife, with their black sands and crystal-clear, warm water. The consistent and beautiful sunshine and stunning natural spaces also help, and mean that visitors can both explore and relax!”
Things to be aware of…
“Tenerife can become quite busy, especially during the peak of summer. As the weather is good all year round, there is lots of opportunity to find a quieter time to visit if you have the flexibility.

How to get to Tenerife

There are many ways to get to Tenerife depending on your starting point, budget, and preferences.

By plane:

Getting to Tenerife by plane is easy and convenient, since the island has two airports, Tenerife South (Reina Sofía) and Tenerife North (Los Rodeos). Tenerife South is the main gateway for most international travellers, especially from the UK and mainland Europe, with regular flights throughout the year and increased frequency during the summer. Tenerife North handles more domestic flights and connections from mainland Spain and other Canary Islands. Whichever route you choose, you’ll find flying to Tenerife straightforward and well-connected. From the UK, flights usually take around 4 and a half hours.

 By car:

Driving in Tenerife is a great way to explore the island at your own pace, and getting around by car is simple and stress-free. If you’re arriving by plane, car rental services are available at both Tenerife South and Tenerife North airports, with a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs. The island has a well-maintained road network, and driving is on the right-hand side, as in mainland Spain.

Bringing your own car from the UK to Tenerife is definitely possible, though it takes a bit of planning. Since Tenerife is an island, you’ll need to drive through France and Spain, then take a ferry from the mainland to the Canary Islands. The most common route is to drive to the south of Spain – usually to Cadiz or Huelva – where you can catch a ferry to Tenerife. The ferry journey takes around 36–40 hours and you can take your car on board.

By bus:

While you can’t take a bus all the way to Tenerife, since it is an island, you can use busses as part of your journey before finishing with a ferry ride. Long-distance bus companies like FlixBus operate routes from the UK to major cities across Europe, including Paris, Madrid, and eventually to southern Spanish cities like Cadiz or Huelva.

From one of these southern port cities, Cadiz and Huelva being those we suggest, you can catch a ferry to Tenerife. The ferry ride takes around 36 – 40 hours and can be booked with or without a vehicle.

Travelling by bus is the most budget-friendly (and slowest) option, but it can be a great way to see more of Europe if you’re not in a rush. Just be prepared for multiple legs and transfers and consider booking accommodations for overnight stops along the way if needed.

By train:

While you cannot take a train directly to Tenerife since it is an island, you can use trains as part of a journey to the island, even from the UK (if you take the Eurostar from London to Paris and then a train into Spain!). Visitors taking the train would need to make their way to southern ports like Cadiz or Huelva.

Once you reach one of these coastal cities, you can board a ferry to Tenerife. The ferry takes about 36 – 40 hours and runs a few times a week, with options to book a cabin for a more comfortable trip. There are more frequent ferries during the summer, so if travelling in the winter be sure to check carefully to avoid any delays.

This route is ideal if you enjoy slow travel and want to see a bit of Europe on the way. It’s not the fastest option, but it’s a unique way to reach Tenerife without flying, combining scenic rail travel with a sea voyage!

By boat:

Reaching Tenerife by boat is a unique and scenic option, perfect if you’re up for a slower, more adventurous journey. While there are no direct passenger boat routes from the UK, you can sail or cruise your way there with a few steps.

Depending on budget and planning, visitors are definitely able to sail privately to Tenerife, with many journeys often making their way down the Atlantic coast of France and Spain before crossing to the Canaries. Marina facilities in Tenerife are excellent, especially for international travellers.

Equally, visitors can easily book a ferry from mainland Spain. Ferries leave from Cadiz or Huelva and arrive in Tenerife. These are large, comfortable ships that carry passengers, vehicles, and cargo, and the crossing takes roughly 36 – 40 hours.
