Sounds pretty dreamy, right?
By now, winter has overstayed its welcome, and spring still isn’t delivering those blue-sky days. So, where can you escape for warm weather, golden beaches, and maybe a sneaky Aperol Spritz by the sea?
April is prime time to travel – longer days, fewer crowds, and better deals on flights and accommodation. Some places are bursting into bloom, while others are already basking in sunshine, waiting for you.
From Portugal’s coast to Greece’s islands, here are five of the best places to visit in April – just as they’re coming to life.
Algarve, Portugal
Average April temperatures: 14-22°C
April in the Algarve means sunshine, fewer tourists, and that perfect comfortable weather for exploring. Head to Praia da Marinha for jaw-dropping cliffs and turquoise waters – it’s consistently rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the world (and in April, you won’t be fighting for towel space). Jump on a boat tour through the stunning Benagil Caves, one of the most famous sea caves on the planet. This time of year is also a great time for dolphin spotting and coastal hikes along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Easter is a big deal here, with traditional Folar da Páscoa (sweet Easter bread) in every bakery and the Festival of the Sovereign Mother in Loulé, where a statue of the Virgin Mary is paraded through the town on Easter Sunday, followed by fireworks and celebrations.
Brac Island, Croatia
Average April temperatures: 11-20°C
Brac in April is a breath of fresh air – literally. With mild temperatures and clear skies, it’s a great time to visit Zlatni Rat Beach, a stunning golden spit that changes shape with the tide. The island’s hiking trails, like the climb to Vidova Gora, offer incredible views without the summer crowds racing you to the top. Easter in Croatia is a lively affair, with traditional processions, church services, and families gathering for feasts of roasted lamb and Pinca (a sweet Easter bread). It’s also a fantastic time for an olive oil tasting tour – trust us, Croatian olive oil is next level.
Gran Canaria, Spain
Average April temperatures: 17-23°C
Gran Canaria in April is that dreamy mix of warm beach days and adventure. Relax on Playa de Las Canteras, one of Spain’s best urban beaches, or explore the sand dunes of Maspalomas for a desert-meets-ocean vibe. Hikers will love Roque Nublo, a dramatic rock formation with panoramic island views. Easter brings Semana Santa processions, especially in Las Palmas, where candlelit parades and traditional music fill the streets.
Crete, Greece
Average April temperatures: 13-22°C
Springtime in Crete means fields of wildflowers, ancient ruins without the queues, and local life at its most authentic. Explore the pink sands of Elafonissi Beach (yes, it really is pink!), wander the Samaria Gorge, or visit the legendary Palace of Knossos without the summer rush. Easter in Greece is a huge celebration, and Crete is no exception – expect midnight fireworks, feasting on slow-roasted lamb, and tsougrisma, a fun Easter tradition where people try to crack each other’s red-dyed eggs.
Ibiza, Spain
Average April temperatures: 12-20°C
Forget the partying all night vibes that you usually get in summer, Ibiza in April is all about stunning nature, peaceful beaches and authentic island vibes. Check out Cala d’Hort for amazing views of the mystical Es Vedrà rock, or head to Las Salinas Beach for golden sands and a laid-back atmosphere. Easter brings Semana Santa processions (13–20 April), especially in Ibiza Town, where centuries-old traditions take over the streets. If you stick around into May, don’t miss the Ibiza Medieval Fair (8–11 May), when Dalt Vila transforms into a medieval wonderland with market stalls, street performers and jousting tournaments.
