The Best Places to Visit in Crete
August 6, 2024
When searching for a relaxing break and a chance to unwind, it is unsurprising that Greece is often the first destination that springs to mind. Renowned as the perfect place to take in culture, history, and some of the best food Europe has to offer, Greece has something for everyone. Crete, the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean and the largest of the Greek islands, has often been referenced as the place to go to experience the joys of Greece as well as the finest of its cuisine. There are good reasons why Crete is loved by so many people, and we wholeheartedly agree with them.
For those unfamiliar with the island, as well as frequent visitors who are keen to soak in as much as they can, here we explore some of the best places to go in Crete, to enhance your villa holiday and ensure you experience the very best that Crete has to offer.
Kourtaliotiko Gorge
Our first recommendation of where to visit in Crete takes you on a breathtaking trip to some of Crete’s most impressive natural beauty, and into the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. This hike takes you past stunning waterfalls, pools of sparkling water, and expanses of stunning, rugged landscapes combining to form an immense canyon. Ending at the beach of Preveli which also features in our list of Best Things To Do in Crete this is an absolute hidden jewel and embarking on this adventure will leave you feeling awe-struck and inspired.
Balos Lagoon
Following the theme of spectacular natural scenery, a trip to Balos Lagoon is an absolute must when visiting Crete. Amongst the most popular Cretan spots, the lagoon comprises picturesque waters and glistening, pink-tinged sand and has shallows which are perfect for families to enjoy. It is common to see boat trips arriving and passengers disembarking to take in the stunning panoramic views of the lagoon as there are frequent ferry crossing from Kissamos. Be aware, it might get a little windy at certain times of year, and we suggest arriving early in the morning to enjoy the waters at their most tranquil!
Old Hersonissos
For those who like a historical activity, Old Hersonissos is an enticing option . An authentic, perfectly preserved village, the highlight of Old Hersonissos is its central square where there are numerous bars and tavernas to sit and enjoy the friendly feel of this charming village. It can be a calming escape from the bustling other ‘must-sees’ on Crete, and is often the choice for tourists, and indeed locals, who prefer to enjoy some time away from the crowds.
Rethimno
Rethimno, or Rethymno, is another beautiful old town which is absolutely worth a stop. Located on Crete’s northern coast, the old town includes a pretty Venetian harbour and plenty of bars to unwind in. The lighthouse, built in the 1830s when Egypt ruled Crete, is a landmark in Rethimno and stands at around 9 metres tall at the edge of the harbour. The sweeping arm of the harbour, met at night with the twinkling lights reflecting on the water, makes for a perfect photo opportunity.
Chania
We cannot forget to mention Chania, the crown jewel of most Cretan itineraries and the much-loved city, known for its 14th century architecture and cooking-pot cultural history. The rich wealth of activities in Chania cannot be overstated, from delicious food to fascinating museums to stunning beaches, there is so much to enjoy here, not to mention its beauty with its unique stonework and colourful buildings. If you like Chania, then we would also recommend taking a trip out to Lourtro, an adorable village in the Chania region. In an area known as Sfakia, Loutro, like much of Crete, it is all about eating, drinking, and lounging. With its pretty church and local market, it is the perfect place to come and take a breather, enjoying an almost fairytale, faraway feeling in this sleepy and incredibly peaceful haven. If you are keen to bask in the quiet, and enjoy a stroll through a beautiful place, you couldn’t find a better place to visit!
