Best Time To Visit Hvar
May 7, 2025
While Hvar is small, when it comes to planning the perfect trip, timing is everything. Do you want sun-drenched days filled with beach trips and hours in the sun? Or are you more into hidden coves, uncrowded streets, and long, lazy lunches in the open air? This Dalmatian gem changes with the seasons – and each one has its own magic. Whether you’re chasing festivals, looking for peace and quiet, or just want the best weather for island-hopping, knowing when to go to Hvar can shape your whole experience. In this guide, we break down the best time to visit Hvar based on what kind of trip you are most eager for.
Winter
With temperatures around 13°C, the winter months are certainly the mildest period on Hvar. That said, since Hvar is the sunniest island in the Mediterranean, even during December, January, and February there is decent sunlight and bright, crisp days. Winter is the best time to visit Hvar if you crave peace, quiet, and solitude in a new environment. It’s perfect for exploring the island, seeing the sights without swarms of tourists, taking in the landscapes, and enjoying activities like hiking, painting, and other quiet, individual hobbies. If you’re eager to find a well-priced winter trip, Hvar is ideal. There is some rain during these months, but nothing like the UK – just bring a light waterproof, and that will be more than enough! Note also that many of the restaurants are closed during this time of year so while a few remain open, you won’t be able to visit all the hotspots as many close for the off-season.
Winter is also a wonderful time to visit Hvar if you’re eager to experience the festive season in a different setting. With Advent events starting as early as November, it’s perfect for those who celebrate Christmas (or simply enjoy the Christmassy atmosphere). Visiting in time for the lighting of the first Advent candle offers a lovely and unique way to embrace the holiday spirit. Stay to see the traditional Christmas stalls being set up in the town centre and enjoy the peaceful lull of this magical time of year, along with the tranquillity that spending it on Hvar can bring.
Spring
As temperatures rise to an average of 19°C in the spring, the months of March, April, and May bring about an awakening on the island. This is the best time to enjoy Hvar in full bloom, with the flora coming alive again, fragrant and beautiful. Enjoy long walks along the island’s many hiking trails, wander through the infamous lavender fields, or potter around the olive groves and experience Hvar as the wildlife wakes up again. Now is the time to enjoy the outdoors while the sun is out but not too overbearing – hike and bike your way through your holiday! This is also the best time to enjoy the island before the mania of the high tourist season. While there will be some other visitors, it is not yet peak season, so sites and attractions can be enjoyed without crowds or long queues. Prices are still affordable during this time of year too – more so than in the summer when you can expect things to be a little bit more expensive.
Plenty of events take place during spring as well – including many sporting events, such as the May Trail Race: a running race crossing over mountainous terrain with beautiful views, culminating at the sparkling waters of the Adriatic, perfect for a post-race swim. Register to take part for an extra challenge during your holiday, or simply spectate and enjoy the great atmosphere and stunning location.
Summer
By far the most popular time of year to visit Hvar, summer is when temperatures soar, and the island is at its most lively. Visitors can expect highs of 30°C in July and August, with minimal rain and wind, making it a true Mediterranean escape. Tourists can enjoy a vibrant and busy atmosphere, full of others soaking in the same paradise. This is when the island is in full swing, with all the restaurants, clubs, bars, and cafes fully open for business and eager to serve hungry guests. If you’re into nightlife, this is also the time to visit – clubs and live performances peak during summer, making it the perfect time to dance the night away. Naturally, this is the best season to enjoy Hvar’s plentiful beaches and bask in the sun, taking refreshing dips in the sea to cool off. Read our list of Best Beaches in Hvar blog to pick the one that suits you best and get ready to spend your day lounging by the waves – just be sure to pack plenty of suncream and a hat to stay protected in the midday heat. Also bear in mind that if you’re planning a summer visit, it’s a good idea to book well in advance, including hire cars, and to expect higher prices due to demand.
Summer also brings plenty of organised events, such as the Hvar Summer Festival, kicking off in early June. With local and international musical performances, food, live shows, and more, it’s an annual event that’s been hosted for over 60 years. Art events like the Sketching Workshop held in June are another unique type of activity to enjoy during your stay. Additionally, the famous Lavender Festival in July celebrates the island’s iconic lavender fields, educating visitors on cultivation methods and the creation of lavender-based products.

Autumn
Finally, as the heat begins to fade and temperatures drop back down to the mid-to-low 20s, the autumn months are a great time to visit Hvar if you’d like to enjoy the last of the sun with cheaper prices and fewer tourists. As most visitors begin to return home, a trip in early September means most restaurants and bars that close seasonally will still be open, making it a great time to enjoy the benefits of the final weeks of the ‘on’ season. As the weeks progress, some venues will begin to close, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t still a wonderful time to explore. September and October might even be the best months for swimming, as the sea – warmed by summer – retains its mildness while the beaches are much quieter. Enjoy peaceful trips to the shore with ample room to lay down your towels for a post-swim recline. Weather is also very reliable during this time of year, with sunny, mild conditions lasting throughout September, October, and even into November. Enjoy tourist attractions and sights with reduced crowds, warm walks in the sun without the sweltering heat, and plenty of space to soak in the beauty of Hvar.
There are also still a few events that happen in Hvar during these months. The Hvar Film Festival in September, for example, is a brilliant addition to any travel itinerary, showcasing both short and feature-length films with a focus on the Mediterranean movie market. Alternatively, the Spartan World Championships, an obstacle course race, takes place on the island every October. It’s a great spectacle and super fun to watch for anyone lucky enough to be in Hvar during that time!
Whether you’re after sunny beach days, peaceful winter escapes, or lively local festivals, Hvar offers something special in every season. No matter when you choose to visit, the island’s beauty, charm, and character are sure to leave memories that last.
