East Algarve and, more specifically, to the east of Faro, is becoming the go to destination for the most discerning travellers, keen to experience a more authentic Portugal experience. Faro is not just the home of The Algarve‘s only international Airport, it is also the region’s capital and is steeped in history with great sightseeing, restaurants, boat trips and lots of regular local festivals and events. Inland from Faro are Estoi and São Brás de Alportel, with sensational meadowland and away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. Just to the east of Faro is Olhão, a charming fishing port which has managed to remain more or less unspoiled by tourism. Further east again is Tavira, an exceedingly pretty old town in which time seems to have stood still. While the surrounding areas have become developed, the centre of the town seems a world away from the busy tourist resorts.
São Brás stands as one of the quintessential Portuguese small towns, located in the municipality of Faro. Sleepy and little known to tourists, agriculture and small businesses define the region, making it the perfect, well-kept secret for those who discover it. Walking around, you can admire the architecture and mansions built at the height of industrialisation in the area, specifically the cork industry, and take a walk to the southern side of the town where the São Brás Church proudly stands, a monument that once housed the Bishops of the Algarve. Rebuilt in the 18th century, the church is located on the ruins of a much older temple. For those keen on their history, São Brás is a perfect place to visit, with a deep and rich past to dive into, both recent and archaeological. Alongside palaeolithic remains, the intertwining influences of Roman, Visigoth, Islamic, Renaissance and Industrial periods makes this small town a melting pot of culture that is tangible when walking around. Spend time pottering around the shops, housed in low, white-painted buildings, or admire the impressive architecture decorated with tiled façades – so typically Portuguese. A villa stay in São Brás will leave you feeling truly immersed in the laid-back living of this traditional town.
Estoi is a charming town located 10 km north of the coast, best known for its magnificent palace and well-preserved Roman ruins. The Palácio de Estoi, once in a state of disrepair, has been meticulously restored to its former grandeur in the Neo-Rococo style. The palace now gleams with its elaborate tile work and features stunning gardens, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll.
Equally captivating are the Roman ruins in Estoi, considered some of the finest in Portugal. Originally an agricultural centre, the site was transformed into a luxurious villa in the 2nd century. Visitors can explore an exceptionally preserved Roman temple and bathing complex, where sharp-eyed observers can still spot intricate Roman mosaic tiling.
In addition to these historic treasures, the town is home to a 15th-century church, which, like nearby São Brás, was heavily damaged by the earthquake of 1755 and subsequently refurbished. A particularly fascinating detail is that the wood used for the church altars was repurposed from old ships. For those who appreciate intricate design choices, the altar’s decoration includes elements of farming equipment, adding to its unique charm. Estoi is ideal for those wanting to unwind, enjoy traditional Portuguese food and wine, and bask in the beauty of this historic village.
Olhão, a hidden gem in the East Algarve region, offers an unspoiled blend of natural beauty and rich culture. This traditional fishing village is known for its stunning lagoons and idyllic islands with sandy shores. Every morning, local fishermen set sail, sometimes venturing as far as Morocco, which contributes to the fascinating cultural fusion that defines this part of the Algarve.
The village itself is a captivating mix of whitewashed, flat-roofed houses and older architecture reminiscent of historic Portuguese towns, with tiled façades and balconies overlooking the narrow streets. Along the sparkling beaches, you’ll find simple, authentic restaurants serving locals and visitors alike, offering traditional Portuguese dishes, including exceptional seafood.
A visit to Olhão holds more than just sun and sand. As you promenade through its cobbled streets, you’ll experience a true taste of local life, making it the perfect destination for those seeking not only relaxation, but also an authentic cultural escape.
Just 25km west of the Spanish border lies the city of Tavira, nestled along Portugal’s Algarve coast. This picturesque fishing town is known for its golden beaches and traditional Portuguese charm, where streets wind between beautifully tiled houses and lead down to the Gilão River. Since Tavira is more established as a holiday destination, it offers a rich variety of activities and culinary experiences to satisfy travellers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
One of the town’s highlights is the Castelo de Tavira, a medieval castle in the parish of Santiago, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city from its ramparts. The main square and the local museum are also must-visit spots for those eager to explore Tavira’s history and culture.
Tavira’s food scene is another reason to stay in this corner of East Algarve. Alongside traditional Portuguese cuisine, the city offers a diverse range of international flavours, from Indian and Italian to Brazilian, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every craving. Stroll along the riverfront, cross the Old Bridge, and discover a cosy bar where you can enjoy some of the finest food and drink that Portugal has to offer.
