Split, in Dalmatia, is the second largest city in Croatia and the largest on the Adriatic coast. With excellent transport connections by bus, sea, air and train, it’s easy to travel to and from the city and is fast becoming a popular holiday destination. It is a buzzing, exuberant city which combines tradition with modernity. Split has some beautiful architecture, fabulous and varied restaurants, interesting bars and a lively nightlife, not to mention some dazzling beaches and shorelines.
Some of Croatia’s most beautiful islands are easily accessed from Split; Brac is the largest island in central Dalmatia with several towns and villages and a striking landscape of steep cliffs, inky waters and pine forests. The scenery on Hvar Island is awe-inspiring with abandoned ancient hamlets, vineyards and the lavender fields for which the island is famous, but a visit to swanky Hvar town is a must – this really is the place to see and be seen with elegant restaurants and legendary bars, Hvar is rapidly becoming the go to place for the latest generation of “Jet Setters”.

Split is one of Croatia’s main transport hubs, making it easy to reach by air, sea, or land.
By Air: Split Airport (SPU) is around 25 minutes from the city centre, with frequent direct flights from major European cities – especially during summer. From the airport, you can take a shuttle bus (around 40 minutes to the bus station), taxi, or private transfer.
By Sea: Ferries connect Split with Ancona in Italy, and there are regular services to nearby islands such as Hvar, Brač, and Vis. Catamarans are the quickest option for island hopping, while car ferries are available if you’re driving.
By Land: Buses run regularly from other Croatian cities like Dubrovnik, Zadar, and Zagreb. There’s also a train service from Zagreb, but it’s slower than the bus. For more flexibility, renting a car is ideal – especially if you plan to explore places like Krka National Park, Trogir, or the Dalmatian Coast.
Summer (June–August): Hot, busy, and full of life with festivals, nightlife, and beach days. Expect average highs of 28–30°C and sea temperatures around 24°C.
Late Spring (May) & Early Autumn (September–October): Pleasantly warm with fewer crowds – perfect for sightseeing and day trips. Highs average 22–26°C, and the sea stays swimmable into early autumn.
Winter (November–March): Mild and quiet, with highs around 10–15°C. While some tourist services close, the Old Town still feels lively thanks to its local community.
