Paros, with its gleaming villages, golden beaches, and laid-back vibe, is more than just a picture-perfect Greek island. It’s a destination where families can connect, explore, and create cherished memories. Whether you’re travelling with energetic toddlers, curious teens, or multi-generational family members, Paros offers a mix of activities that cater to all.
From sailing along its turquoise waters to discovering ancient history and indulging in hands-on local experiences, this island is brimming with opportunities for adventure and bonding. In this guide, we’ll uncover the best things to do with kids in Paros, ensuring your time here is as delightful and stress-free as the gentle Aegean breeze.
Naousa Town
The first stop on our Paros to-do list is the town of Naousa. This charming village is home to some of the island’s best nightlife, featuring luxury restaurants and boutique shops to peruse. As well as being the ideal place to find mementos from your stay, a trip to Naousa promises a true feeling of the Cyclades. Despite the influx of tourists, the traditional architecture and essence of the Greek islands remain intact. Built around the port, Naousa boasts numerous cafes, eateries, bars, and activities, though for those hoping to dine out, arriving early is wise as the town can get quite busy after sunset. A walk through Naousa, admiring the pretty boats in the harbour and visiting the iconic St. Nikolas chapel, makes for a perfect day trip and, coupled with the stunning beaches that envelop the town, it is truly one of the best places to visit in Paros.
The Church with 100 Gates
For families eager to explore the culture and history of Paros, a visit to Parikia’s most important site is a must. The Panagia Ekatontapiliani, or “the church with 100 gates,” is a Byzantine church complex consisting of a main chapel ‘Holy Shrine of the Virgin Mary’, two surrounding chapels, and a baptistry. Located near the port, the church’s distinct architecture, with its stone and marble archways, is a striking sight. According to legend, the church contains 99 gateways, and the final one will appear if the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople becomes an Orthodox church again. Celebrated annually on August 15th with a grand religious festival, pilgrims from across Greece gather here to worship the Virgin Mary. These festivities spark traditional celebrations spanning several days, and a great cultural experience for any visitor here during mid-August.
Museums, Temples & Acropoles
Paros is also home to many other fascinating historic sites that showcase the island’s rich cultural heritage. Having been inhabited since antiquity, many artefacts and sites have been uncovered and are now housed in museums or preserved as tourist attractions. The Archaeological Museum of Parikia features stunning examples of Greek art, some crafted from the famous ‘Parian’ marble found on the island.
For a deeper dive into the island’s history, the Sanctuary of Asklepios is an incredible place to visit. The temple highlights the dedication to healing cults in the ancient world and the early emergence of concepts around medicine and well-being. The Mycenaean Acropolis in Kolymbithres, though more ruined, is equally important, illustrating the island’s geographic significance in ancient Greece. Additionally, the Byzantine Museum in Naousa offers a glimpse into more recent history, showcasing collections of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, crosses, and other religious items.
Port of Pounda
For families seeking outdoor adventure, a trip to Pounda Bay (not to be confused with Pounda Beach on the opposite side of the island) is ideal. Visitors can try a variety of water sports, including kitesurfing. The bay’s sandy shores are perfect for relaxation, while its world-famous kitesurfing conditions attract enthusiasts of all levels. Several kitesurfing centres offer lessons, making it easy for beginners to give it a try.
Families can also visit the island of Antiparos by boat which is directly opposite the port (one nautical mile away). Ferries depart and arrive on a regular schedule many times daily, carrying both passengers and vehicles making it the perfect day trip for holidaymakers.
Paros Park & Open-Air Cinemas
Another must-visit spot for families is Paros Park, the Environmental and Cultural Park in northern Paros. Spanning over 800 acres, this nature reserve hosts numerous events and activities throughout the year. Nature and history enthusiasts will appreciate its well-preserved landscapes, making it one of the island’s best places for outdoor exploration. Take a leisurely walk, attend a cultural event, or simply enjoy the scenery at the park’s café and restaurant.
One of the park’s standout activities is its summer open-air cinema, Cine Enastron. Watching a film under the stars is a magical experience for families allowing visitors to enjoy fan-favourite movies in a unique setting. Cine Enastron isn’t the only option – Cine Rex in Parikia offers another open-air movie experience. Since booking in advance isn’t possible, arriving early is recommended to secure good seats. Both cinemas also have nearby food options, so grabbing snacks to accompany your movie is easy.
Butterfly Valley
Finally, for nature-loving families, a visit to the Butterfly Valley is an unforgettable outing. Located in Sotires, about 7 km from Parikia and near the Monastery of Jesus of Woods, this valley bursts into life each summer as Jersey Tiger Moths flock to the area, drawn by the scents of the trees which grow here. The sight of the moths amidst the lush greenery is a breathtaking natural phenomenon. While similar butterfly valleys exist in other parts of Greece and Turkey, this spot is a highlight in Paros and offers a serene and educational experience for all ages.
Paros is a paradise for families, offering a harmonious blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural discovery that creates unforgettable memories for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re exploring its historic sites, diving into its turquoise waters, or simply soaking in its natural beauty, this enchanting island ensures a vacation filled with joy and togetherness.
