Splendid manor house in Magoito, near Sintra

This magnificent estate has 5500m2 of gardens and is close to the village of Magoito in Sintra/Cascais Natural Park, a World Heritage site. The property is secluded and quiet and it is difficult to believe it is only a five minute walk to the village centre.

The main house dates back to the early part of the 20th century and over the years has played host to numerous visiting dignitaries. The entire property has been completely renovated yet many of the original features have been retained; traditional hand-painted tiles have been kept in the suites and some of the bedrooms. A flight of steps leads to a terrace with views across the countryside and the front door opens into a living room which has an impressive inscribed fireplace, hand-painted beams and leads to the formal dining room. The large kitchen has the original blue and white tiles but is fully equipped with modern appliances.

The house has its own carefully restored chapel and the spacious living room, which houses the snooker table, has steps up to the original wine press. As there are some low ceilings and open stairs which add to the overall character care should be taken with young children in some areas of the house. The bedroom on the lower level contains a stunning and unusual bathroom with a freestanding bath and basin; it is designed around the original well which has been covered with reinforced glass and in the winter the water rises up to the level of the glass - perfectly safe but unique! From this level double glass doors lead on to a secluded terrace with steps up to the garden. Paths wind through the various areas of the garden which is a mass of colour with lawns and rose bushes.

The tennis court has a fast-draining, fast-playing porous cement surface for recreational play only. It is overlooked by a terrace with a parasol and directors chairs where the less energetic can enjoy a G & T! The impressive pool house has glass doors opening onto the pool. Another area of the garden has an ornamental pond and fountain. There is garden furniture and sun loungers by the summer house, ideal for sunbathing and with views as far as the Pena Palace in Sintra - the centre of Sintra is only 20 euros by taxi.

In the area there are seven golf courses; sailing, windsurfing, big game fishing and scuba diving are all available in Cascais and tailor-made activity tours are also available for our guests and can be arranged and paid for locally. The area is excellent for walking, cycling, climbing, horse riding and "parapente" or kitesurfing.
